The Big Tiebreaker – This year the Irish broke the
tie and “brought home the bacon”. John Fitzpatrick and
Brian Kennedy carried the day for the Irish.
Greg Hartline and Ian Masson of the Dorsey team
were the runners up and they really did give the Irish a run for their
money. The Celtic Shootout saw the honors of the day go to the Denver
team represented by Ed Timmons Jr and Danny Hahn. Great win especially
for first time tournament competitors.
We hope to see you back next year. The evening celebrations
started with the Parade of the Green Jackets
(winners of the last 11 tournaments) who marched into the Ballroom
to “The Wearin’ of
the Green”.
Ross Perot, Sr, famous Dallas Philanthropist, was
on hand to present the McKillop Irish Spirit
Award to Richard Moore, who was blinded by a rubber bullet in Derry
as a child of 10. A college degree, marriage, and a family later Richard
went on to form the international organization “Children in Crossfire”. This organization
helps children who have been injured as a result of living in areas
of continuous conflict. When Richard sang about his native Derry in
Northern Ireland “The Town I Loved So Well,” there was
not a dry eye in the house.
At the traditional singsong following
the dinner, Richard Moore entranced the audience
as he played on his electric guitar accompanied
by Dubliner Terry Browne on the pennywhistle. This year the auction
item was a five-star trip for two to New Zealand and Fiji generously
donated by Qantas Vacations and Air
Pacific. Kieron Keady not only donated the trip
he also auctioned it. The auction realized $25,000. A portion of the
monies raised at the tournament went to the following organizations:
PeacePlayers, Children in Crossfire, and the Department of Irish Studies
at the University of St Thomas.
A hundred thousand thanks to Barbara
and Cliff Miercort and their committee of volunteers
who made everything possible. A very special thanks to Michelle Anderson
on the most breathtaking table decorations that we have ever had.
And, keeping the good wine until last where would we be without the
tournament mainstay Bob Elliott, the renowned Northwood Club golf
pro and his merrie band in the Golf Shop and to José Estrada who oversees the dining room, comes early and
leaves late, an inevitability when the Irish are involved.
May 11,
2009 will see the Americans try to bring the
trophy home.
