Again, the victory went to the Irish represented by Eamonn Cregan and Tony Condon.
The game went to a tiebreaker with the former 2002 tournament champions from
the FelCor team led by Captain Andy Welch with Mike DeNicola, Erik Nylen, and
Troy Pentacost losing by 12 inches.
The charity supported this year was PeacePlayers, which implements year round
coaching programs in Northern Ireland, South Africa, Cyprus and Israel/Palestine
reaching over 45,000 children.
We were very grateful to Sean Tuohey of PeacePlayers
who made the trip to Dallas for the evening to share the good news about the
two principals in Northern Ireland, Dave Cullen and Trevor Ringland, who received
the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS in recognition for their work with
PeacePlayers International in Northern Ireland. The Arthur Ashe Courage Award
is presented each year to individuals whose contributions transcend sports.
Previous Arthur Ashe Courage Award winners include Muhammad Ali, Jim Valvano
and Pat Tillman.
The morning started with a misting rain (unheard of in Texas but very welcome)
which clearly gave the Irish an advantage. A new format was tried with lunch-on-the-go,
which due to the cool day worked out very well. The dinner format also changed
to non-formal seating and buffet style food stations around the Ballroom together
with a great band made it a very relaxed event.
Thanks to Irishman John Kane
at the piano the evening finished with an Irish singsong and the die-hards
closed the club down in the wee hours! Huge thanks to Tommy Gallagher who leads
his teams of Irish golfers to Dallas year after year.
All Texans look forward
to the Irish invasion, and as a result, Dallas is a much livelier city in “the
Merrie Month of May.”
