| Dear
Friends of The American Ireland Fund,
Let me take this opportunity to thank you for your
dedication to the athletes of Special Olympics around
the World and here in Texas.
Next month 58 Special Olympics athletes from Texas
will take the journey of their lives to Ireland to
compete in the Special Olympics World Summer Games.
By sharing your time, expertise and money, you are
making a significant contribution to that journey.
In 1968, Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded Special Olympics
on the idea that people with mental retardation can
be more involved in everyday society through athletics
competition and training.
By increasing fitness and skill levels, Special Olympics
athletes are building self-esteem and gaining social
skills, providing lifelong benefits that might not
otherwise be achieved.
The focus of the movement is on abilities rather
than disabilities, and this is epitomized by the athletes
who will represent 160 countries in Ireland. Special
Olympics changes the lives of everyone associated
with the movement by allowing the human spirit to
be inspired. And you now are a part of it.
Mental retardation touches all of society and your
personal contribution to Special Olympics and the
World Summer Games reflects your dedication to making
a difference in your community and the world.
On behalf of over 1 million Special Olympics athletes
worldwide and especially our Texas athletes, I thank
you for your commitment to changing the lives of people
with mental retardation.
Sincerely,
Margaret Larsen
President and CEO
