Tyrone Monday June 25 2006 and spent the day visiting with
the children and Director Jean Kelly.
Fly-in
program >
Speedwell processes up
to 20,000 children each year aged 3 through 11 from Catholic
and Protestant schools who partner each other in learning
about the environment. Their motto and focus being "This
is our land it belongs to us all".
Speedwell >
The project is
named after a wildflower called speedwell found growing
in the nearby Parkanoor Forest. The flower is reputed
to have healing properties and was greatly in ancient times
by the local population.
Page Tucker writes:
Our visit to Speedwell was inspirational!
Seeing the children working
together, laughing, excited about sharing their experiences
with us, gave
one a real sense of hope for the future. It was heartwarming
to see the kids
just being kids without any sense of a barrier between
them. And they are
learning about such important issues while they are having
fun; the
environment, water conservation and reusable energy sources.
Kudos to Jean
Kelly and her entire staff for developing and implementing
such a worthwhile
project that is truly making a difference in children's
lives.
