June 24
saw 15 Texas Eagle Scouts heading to Ireland. This was
the third in the scout exchange program started in 2003
and partially funded by a grant from the Thomas Tierney
Irish American Cup Challenge held annually in Dallas.
The Scouts interacted with the same number of Irish Scouts
and had a glorious two weeks exploring the culture of
Ireland.
The Texans hosted the Irish Scouts
on July 4th to a typical Texas 4th celebration, breakfast
burritos were the hit of the day and dinner was a big Tex-Mex
spread. Skits, songs, and stories were performed and
the Irish Scouts said it was the best campfire they had
ever enjoyed. Alas, fireworks were not available. The
highlight of the trip was the home-stay organized to
give the Texas Scouts a glimpse of Irish family life.
Kudos to Tom Codd, 2006 Chairman of the Dallas golf tournament
and Board member of Circle 10 /Boy Scouts of America
and to the Scout volunteer leaders, Bob & Colleen Fries and Keith & Markie
Nathan who took the group to Ireland. Terrific team work.
All are now eagerly awaiting the return visit of the Irish
Scouts to Texas in 2007. This has been and is a prime
example in creating international understanding and friendships.
After all, it is as important that the young Irish know
as much about Texas and the US as vice versa.
