June 2007 will
find the WineGeese making their way to the wine capital
of the world, Bordeaux, after the 2007 Ireland Funds
Conference from June 22 to 24 in Kenmare, Co Kerry.
On Monday, 25 June, the
group will depart for Bordeaux from Kenmare.
Alternately, you may start the
tour in Bordeaux on the 25th of June, where you
will be met at either Bordeaux Airport or the
Bordeaux train station. |
We will stay at the Hôtel Cordeillan-Bages in Pauillac,
in the heart of the Médoc. From here we will explore
Bordeaux, the spiritual and cultural home of the WineGeese.
The splendid châteaux of Bordeaux and the wines they
produce comprise one of the great cultural treasures of
France – a cultural treasure that is inextricably
tied into the tapestry of Irish history.
The charm and
grace of the Cordeillan-Bages dating to the 18th century
is rivalled only by its food. Chef and Director Thierry
Marx trained under Joël Robuchon and Alain Chapel
and then worked in southern France with Jacques Maximin
before becoming chef, most notably of the Cheval Blanc
in Nîmes. In 2006 he was named “chef of the
year” by the Gault Millau guide.
The new châteaux
we will visit will include:
- The venerable Pape Clément (Cru classé;
the Maxwell family of Dublin)
- Star of the 2005 vintage Château Latour
(1er grand cru classé; Johnston and Barton
families)
- Château de Fieuzal (Cru classé;
owned by Irish businessman Lochlann Quinn)
- Château Lascombes (2ème grand cru
classé; Tony Ryan)
- Château du Tertre (5ème grand cru
classé; the Mitchell family of Dublin;
The current winemaker is David Fennelly from Co
Kilkenny)
- Château d’Issan (3ème grand
cru classé; the Lawton family)
The celebrated Château d’Yquem (1er
cru supérieur and the world’s premier
dessert Sauterne; one of George Washington’s
favorite wines; proprietor Comte Eugene de Lur
Saluces married Anne MacMahon, a member of one
of Ireland’s most distinguished and noble
families)
- And, of course, we will revisit old friends:
Château Lynch-Bages (5ème grand cru
classé; founded by James Lynch who left
Ireland with James II; presently owned by the Cazes
family)
On Friday, the journey will take us to the Cognac
region where we will tour Hennessy (Richard Hennessy
still maintains a castle in Cork), and Delamain (ten
generations of Delamains have produced fine Cognacs
and are connected to Ireland in a boomerang history
starting in France) as well as the charming town
of Cognac. We will spend one night in Cognac with
the tour ending on Saturday, 30 June in Cognac. From
Cognac, there will be transport available to Bordeaux
Airport or the rail station. |
