Margaret Larsen, President of
Special Olympics Texas, has spoken at our last two
golf tournament dinners in Dallas, at our inaugural
dinner in Houston, and in fact was Honorary Chair
of our 2003 Thomas J. Tierney Golf Tournament in Dallas.
Due to this involvement more
monies were raised in Texas this past year to honor
our commitment to Special Olympics Ireland and Texas,
and a record number of Texans attended the Opening
of the World Games of Special Olympics in Dublin this
past June.
While in Ireland we introduced our Texas Special
Olympics dignitaries and families to the American
Ireland Fund projects supported by Texans as well
as the Kennedy brothers, John and Brian, who have
been part of the Irish golfing team to compete in
Texas for the past five years.
Not only did they support the athletes with a monetary
donation, but they also gave a reception for all 58
athletes and their families and coaches at their five
star property The Herbert Park Hotel on the Opening
Day of the Games.
Texas Special Olympians visited the Irish Scout properties
in the Dublin Mountains and also Castle Saunderson
on the Cavan/Fermanagh border.
They forged a tight link with the Irish Scouting
association and are considering an invitation to send
a small group of Special Scouts mixed with mentors
from a regular troop to Ireland next year.
