Mayor John Hickenlooper
John Hickenlooper was elected Mayor of Denver on June
3, 2003, and inaugurated on July 21, 2003. Since taking
office, Mayor Hickenlooper passed a citywide charter reform
initiative to modernize Denver's personnel system, overcame
a $70 million deficit to balance the City budget while
averting major cuts in services and massive layoffs, reached
a deal with United and Frontier Airlines that will enable
both carriers to grow at Denver International Airport,
implemented the most sweeping set of police modernizations
in Denver's history, launched a regional Mile High Marketing
Initiative, hosted a citywide Early Childhood Education
Summit, and, of course, lowered downtown parking meter
rates.
Mayor Hickenlooper graduated from Wesleyan University,
where he received a Bachelors degree in English in 1974
and a Masters degree in geology in 1980. His wife, Helen
Thorpe, is a writer whose work has been published in The
New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, George, and Texas
Monthly. They live in Lower Downtown with their son Teddy.
Helen Thorpe
Helen Thorpe is a freelance writer. Her work has appeared
in The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, Texas
Monthly, The Texas Observer, and George Magazine. Helen
was born in London, England, and grew up in Medford, New
Jersey. Helen joined the staff of The New York Observer
in 1989. In 1992, she moved to the New Yorker to write
Talk of the Town stories. In 1994, she became a staff writer
for Texas Monthly. She left to go freelance five years
later, and has focused on politics and culture.
In 2002, Helen took a year off to work on her husband's
successful campaign for mayor. She has now returned to
writing. Helen also serves on the boards of the Colorado
