“From Wine what wondrous Friendship Springs”
The Inaugural Dinner of The New York Chapter of the Ireland
Funds’ WineGeese Society was held on October 28th in
New York City at The Sky Club - a scenic venue atop The MetLife
Building. Hosted by AIF members John Sharkey and Ken Gorman,
along with AIF Chairman Loretta Brennan Glucksman, the evening
celebrated gourmet cuisine, engaging conversation and, of
course, fine wine.
The term WineGeese is based on the story of the Wild Geese
- Irish who fled their native land after the battle of Kinsale
in the 17th century and established wineries throughout the
Irish Diaspora, most notably in France. The WineGeese Society
of The American Ireland Fund provides an opportunity for
friends to gather, enjoy superb wine and food, and learn
about this fascinating part of Irish history.
Ted Murphy, Ireland’s leading wine historian, introduced
his book The Kingdom of Wine – an intriguing chronicle
of Winegeese history. The evening also welcomed new inductees
to the AIF’s WineGeese Society including Jerry Callaghan,
Karen Callaghan, Maureen O’Driscoll-Levy and Kieran
McLoughlin.
The New York Chapter is the first regional branch of The
WineGeese Society, which has led tours of Irish wineries
throughout the world. The WineGeese Society will also host
an upcoming trip to Sonoma, California from April 6th - 9th,
2006.
