One hundred and fifty American Ireland Funds’ guests
were invited to the Pirate Queen by Irish members
of the New York Dinner Committee Moya Doherty and
John McColgan. They were treated to an extravagant
theatrical rendition of the story of the great
Irish heroine Grace O’Malley.
Grace, through her courage and stubborn determination
overcame the bonds of gender and oppression. After
many battles, she met with her sometime nemesis
Queen Elizabeth I and these two remarkable women
reached a mutual understanding and respect.
The show is a wonderful presentation of this great
Irish story replete with wonderful music and, of
course, dance. It is a huge statement of
the Irish presence on Broadway.
John McColgan and Moya Doherty are best known
as the producers of Riverdance. The show first
opened in 1995 in Dublin and has been seen live
by more than 19 million people worldwide. There
have been more than 9,000 performances in 32 countries
across four continents and the worldwide television
audience to date is in excess of 1.75 billion people.
