Ireland’s Prime Minister, An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, September 15, and then addressed a gathering of American Ireland Fund supporters and donors. The events were organized jointly by The Fund and The Exchange.

Before proceeding to the Bell Podium the Taoiseach, accompanied by AIF Chairman Loretta Brennan Glucksman and NYSE Chairman Marshall Carter walked the floor of the Exchange. He was welcomed warmly, indeed at times applauded, and especially so at the positions of major Irish companies including Bank of Ireland and Elan.

Having rung the bell, the Taoiseach addressed a packed gathering of American Ireland Fund supporters. He spoke of the incredible work The Fund has supported across Ireland for the last thirty years. He said that The Fund’s work was as critical as ever and he urged supporters to maintain their generosity. In response, AIF Chairman Loretta Brennan Glucksman and Board Member Bob McCann, spoke of how consistently the Taoiseach had supported The Fund around the world. They both characterized this event as a great expression of Irish American friendship.

The Taoiseach mingled and posed for photographs with the guests, including many of our Young Leaders.
