April 2003
The Irish Arts Center in alliance with
The American Ireland Fund's Young Leaders Program
Is Proud to Present:
TOM HICKEY inTHE GALLANTJOHN-JOE
One of the most important Irish actors of his generation,
Tom Hickey has created riveting portraits of Ireland's
"everyman" on both stage and screen. He has
received critical kudos for his performances at the
Abbey Theatre and in such films as My Left Foot, Circle
of Friends, The Butcher Boy and Ken Loach's Raining
Stones and Possession, oppositeGwyneth Paltrow and
Aaron Eckhart.
Now, Tom Hickey comes to the Irish Arts Center in
a performance that earned him an Edinburgh Fringe
Festival Best-Actor nomination. The Gallant John-Joe
is a vivid portrait of a man at odds with his daughter,
his country and himself.
Hickey delivers a "bravura performance
"
(Mick Heaney, Sunday Times) as John-Joe Concannon,
a physically decrepit but verbally dexterous widower
whose obsession with his teenage daughter's supposed
pregnancy highlights his alienation from the discombobulating
facets of modern Ireland.
"A performance of rare virtuosity
"
(Fintan O'Toole, The Irish Times), swinging from the
tragic to the richly comic. Author of The Gallant
John-Joe, Tom MacIntyre, is one of the most daring
and excitingly original Irish writers working today.
He is widely published as playwright, poet and writer
of fiction and the winner of the 2001 American Ireland
Fund Literary Award.
