Glucksman Ireland House Inaugural Moynihan Lecture : Oct 2005

Glucksman Ireland House hosted the inaugural Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1927 - 2003) lecture on October 4th in New York City, the first in a series of discussions honoring the celebrated statesmen. In commemoration of Moynihan's commitment to social justice and unwavering support of Irish and Irish/American causes, the evening's speakers included Glucksman House Founder Loretta Brennan Glucksman, U2's front man Bono, Economist Jeffrey Sachs, NYU President John Sexton and New York author/personality Pete Hamill.

Initiated by the Glucksman Ireland House and organized by Financial Dynamics, over 800 attendees were absorbed by Bono and Sachs' description of the horror and deprivation in Africa and how simple solutions could overcome the crisis.

Attendees included Senator Moynihan's wife Elizabeth, U2's lead guitarist The Edge, American Ireland Fund National and Regional Advisory Board Members and over sixty American Ireland Fund Young Leaders.

About Glucksman Ireland House

In 1991, in response to the remarkable resurgence in Irish scholarship and creative arts, and at the initiative of New York University President L. Jay Oliva, the university made the commitment to create a center that would focus on Irish and Irish-American studies and culture. Essential to this enterprise was the vision and philanthropy of Lewis L. Glucksman and Loretta Brennan Glucksman, whose energy and dedication enabled the transformation of two adjoining landmark townhouses at Washington Mews and Fifth Avenue to serve as the elegant home for the center, which was named Glucksman Ireland House in tribute to their pioneering endeavor.

Since its inauguration in the spring of 1993, Glucksman Ireland House at New York University has evolved into a vibrant and prominent center for the presentation and understanding of Irish and Irish-American scholarship and culture. The Irish Studies Program provides formal opportunities for undergraduate students to learn about Irish and Irish-American culture and history.

About Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan

Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1927-2003), sociologist and politician, was one of the foremost public intellectuals in American life of his generation, famously independent and prophetic in his views. After serving in the navy and in academia, Sen. Moynihan held cabinet or sub-cabinet positions under Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, and Gerald Ford. He went on to serve as Ambassador to India and as United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, but he may be best-known for the twenty-three years he spent as Democratic United States Senator from New York State from 1977-2001. Senator Moynihan was also an accomplished author; among his most famous books is Beyond the Melting Pot (1963), an influential study of American ethnicity, co-edited with Michael Glazier. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000.
