This morning, February 23rd, the latest AIF Leadership
Forum was addressed by Dr. Mitchell Reiss the President’s
Special Envoy for Northern Ireland. The purpose of
these Forums is to provide leading AIF donors and
supporters access to key players in Irish affairs.
Dr. Reiss, who holds the rank of Ambassador, has
been the President’s Special Envoy since 2003.
As such, he has been at the center of efforts to
resolve the final blockages to the full implementation
of the Good Friday Agreement. This Forum occurred
after Dr. Reiss’ discussions in Ireland, Great
Britain and with the parties in Northern Ireland
and immediately prior to the intense negotiations
in Washington around St. Patrick’s Day. In
other words, Dr. Reiss’ address was made at
a critical time.
He reviewed the position of key players, explored
the gaps that existed between them, and also noted
the very significant progress that has been made.
He then answered a long series of questions from
our supporters. What is crystal clear is that the
American engagement with the Peace Process in Northern
Ireland is critical and immensely positive.
