It was a glorious day for golf and for the Philadelphia Chapter of The American Ireland Fund as over 250 golfers participated in the 7th Annual AIF Philadelphia Golf Classic.  The event was held at The ACE Club, The Cricket Club, and Whitemarsh Valley Country Club where the participants enjoyed the challenging courses, the camaraderie, and the opportunity to support Ireland in what has become one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the area.

This year’s outing was chaired by Robert Loftus and Michael McCabe, assisted by vice chairs Jim Kane and Sean Rooney and a stellar committee of Philadelphia’s corporate leaders, whose work garnered over a quarter of a million dollars for The American Ireland Fund.

The rounds of golf on the four courses were followed by a reception and dinner at The ACE Club where Philadelphia honored veteran sportscaster Jack Whitaker with its Philadelphia Leadership Award.  The award is presented to the Philadelphian who best exemplifies the core values of The American Ireland fund through charitable works, a love for Ireland and contributions to culture and the game of golf.  Jack Whitaker is a Philadelphia native and former sportscaster for WCAU, CBS and ABC and winner of an Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality.  He was named “Best Announcer” by Sports Illustrated, and is a member of the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame, the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame and the Saint Joseph’s University Athletic Hall of Fame.

Kieran McLoughlin, president of The American Ireland Fund, provided an update on AIF initiatives and premiered a new video on some of The Ireland Fund projects, narrated by Liam Neeson.

Also recognized as part of the program was The Starfinder Foundation, the 2007 local recipient of a portion of the proceeds.  Starfinder’s mission is to create inspirational learning environments where children are encouraged, through soccer, to develop strong moral character, strive for academic excellence, and live with a positive attitude, regardless of their socioeconomic status. Our contribution will support a program to bring Catholic and Protestant young people from Northern Ireland to Philadelphia for Starfinder’s soccer-based leadership training camp.

A lively auction, marshaled by Philly’s own Steve Comly, enabled additional fundraising and sent home some very happy participants who will be attending Eagles Football Games, Villanova Basketball Games, and golf vacations to Newport Rhode Island and Ireland.

The American Ireland Fund and this year’s Golf Committee would like to extend special thanks to our sponsors and encourages everyone to stay tuned for our second annual Leadership Luncheon, the Chieftains Concert, and new programs that will be introduced this year.
