In recognition of the tremendous support shown by
the Philadelphia community, Dennis Durkin and the
AIF decided that the 2007
Golf Classic would support both a local
charitable organization as well as an Irish one whose
missions paralleled that of The Ireland Funds. It
is our intention not only to support these noble
endeavors but to also forge relationships between
our ancestral homeland and the vibrant Irish-American
community here in Philadelphia. This year's local
recipient is St Malachy's School.
St Malachy's Catholic
Elementary School
Located in North Philadelphia,
St. Malachy’s is a preeminent symbol of
ecumenism and outreach to poor and disadvantaged youth and their families. Founded
by Irish famine immigrants in the mid-nineteenth century, the parish was called “the
little church in the woods.” The neighborhood and the parish have undergone
many changes as today’s student population is predominantly African-American
and non-Catholic. Led by the tireless efforts of Father John McNamee and his
dedicated staff, its mission is to educate and enrich the lives of its students
and all members of the community through academic excellence and spiritual growth,
developing the strong moral character needed to make hard choices and a sense
of responsibility for self and others. The mission of the school’s namesake,
St. Malachy, has its roots in his native Armagh, Northern Ireland where he proclaimed
the values of the gospel— peace, justice and the
primacy of God—to a world disrupted by militarism
and violence.
2006 Recipient - LA Salle Academy
La Salle Academy of Philadelphia
opened in 2003 to address the needs of children
living in North Philadelphia/West Kensington, Philadelphia.
Endorsed by the Sisters of Saint Joseph and the
Brothers of Christian Schools, La Salle Academy’s
mission is to educate underprivileged and at-risk
children in grades 3-8 who face significant social,
cultural and academic forms of deprivation. Though
these students and their parents greatly desire
a Catholic school education, they find the possibility
of one far too beyond their means. The neighborhoods
served by La Salle Academy present a great need
for such a mission as many of the families residing
in the area live in poverty.
La Salle Academy’s
commitment to their education includes small class
size (each grade has a maximum of 15 students),
an extended day and year and the academic and spiritual
support to become lifelong learners. La Salle Academy
accepts students regardless of any race, religion,
national or ethnic origin.
