The 2007 American Ireland Fund 18th Pittsburgh Dinner
Gala, held at Heinz Field on St. Patrick's Day, March
17. 625 guests raised $900,000 for projects in Ireland.
James E. Rohr, chairman and CEO of The PNC Financial
Services Group, Inc., and Arthur J. Rooney II, president
of the Pittsburgh Steelers served as dinner chairmen
for the event. The “green tie and tux” dinner
was held at Heinz Field East Club Lounge.
Archbishop Wuerl received The American Ireland Fund’s
highest honor – the prestigious Chairman’s
Distinguished Leadership Award – in recognition
of exceptional leadership in community and charitable
activities.
Archbishop Wuerl was the 11th Bishop of the Catholic
Diocese of Pittsburgh, serving from 1988 until he was
installed in June of 2006 as Archbishop of Washington,
D.C.
This year marks the 31st anniversary of The Ireland
Fund, founded in Pittsburgh in 1976 by Sir Anthony
J.F. O’Reilly, former chairman of the H.J. Heinz
Co. and Daniel M. Rooney, now chairman and owner of
the Pittsburgh Steelers. The American Ireland
Fund as it is known today is the result of a merger
in 1987 between The Ireland Fund and the American Irish
Federation, which was founded in 1963 by President
John. F. Kennedy and Eamon de Valera, then president
of Ireland.
