The 2003 Annual Pittsburgh American Ireland Fund Dinner

The Dinner drew nearly 400 guests to the Westin Convention Center for an evening of laughter and music in support of The American Ireland Fund. The undeniable man of the hour was Jeffrey Romoff, president of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, under whose leadership UPMC has evolved into one of America's largest integrated health care systems and acclaimed centers for medical research and innovation.

The event was truly an extended Romoff family affair. His brother Douglas and cousin Evan Romoff of New York's Harmony 534 created a rollicking video that traced, tongue-in-cheek, Jeff's Jewish-to-newfound Irish roots. Following the video, Doug's wife Linda and uncle Colin Romoff wowed the crowd with an enchanting rendition of "Look to the Rainbow."

At Jeff's side was his beautiful Italian wife, Stefania, and coming in from New York City and beyond were his mother, Evelyn; brother Adam; daughters Jennifer Romoff Gilstrap and Rebecca Kaul (with husband Sid); and grandson Alexander Gilstrap. Presenting gifts from Ireland's I.R.D. Kiltimagh community revitalization project in East Mayo (which will receive $25,000 from the dinner proceeds) were Joseph Walsh and his wife Elizabeth Moriarity.

Other activities for the evening included remarks by Special Olympians Erin Gannon and Marissa Niwa, who will both represent Allegheny County at the Worldwide Special Olympics in June; a performance by 10 young Irish step dancers from the Julia Bell School of Dance; and traditional Irish music by Gaelic Storm that kept many party-goers dancing til past midnight.

In all, the dinner raised $400,000 in support of Ireland, lead by Dan Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers with fellow Founders Circle members Chris Donahue of Federated Investors, Inc., Joe Hardy of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands, Bill Johnson of H.J. Heinz Company, Marty McGuinn of Mellon Financial Corporation, Paul H. O'Neill, Jim Rohr of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., Art Rooney II of Klett Rooney Lieber & Schorling and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tom Usher of United States Steel Corporation.
