Under a spectacular spring sunset over Narragansett Bay, sixty honored guests attended the AIF Rhode Island’s inaugural cocktail reception at the exclusive Squantum Association. The Squantum Association, judged “the brightest bit of architecture north of the famed villas of Newport” in 1872, provided a regal setting as we kicked off the Rhode Island chapter and celebrated our Irish heritage. As it has been host to U.S. Presidents, Senators, Governors and Captains of Industry, so it was to the distinguished list of business and community leaders of Rhode Island who were present.

As guests were serenaded by Larry Reynolds’ classic Irish melodies, the crowd was treated to the melodic voices of Rhode Island’s own Irish Tenors, Representative Paul Crowley and Joe Brady of Newport. Further representing the state’s rich Irish tradition, The Rhode Island Irish Famine Memorial Committee joined in the festivities.

Plans were also announced for the first AIF Rhode Island Golf Classic to be held at Newport National Golf Club on September 12th. To honor the legacy of the Great Famine, the AIF will make a donation to the Rhode Island Famine Memorial from the proceeds of the golf classic.
