The Young Leaders Goal
The goal of the Young Leaders program
is to cultivate the involvement
of young friends of Ireland and
provide a forum for networking
while financially supporting the philanthropic work
of The American Ireland Fund.
Examples of projects in Ireland supported by the Young Leaders
Barretstown is the Irish Branch of Paul Newman’s
Hole-In-The-Wall Gang Camp. The camp provides
a unique programme of adventure, activities and
fun—backed by the medical world—which helps
children with serious illness regain their
confidence and self-esteem. • more >
Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland helps
families in need build their own homes with
a team of volunteers. Catholics and
Protestants work side by side, often in
neighborhoods formerly seen as “enemy.” Relationships form that transcend geography.
The Ireland Funds began working with
Habitat in 1996. With support from The
Ireland Funds, nearly 50 low-income
families have been housed in five Habitat
projects in North and West Belfast in the last
decade. • more >
PeacePlayers International (PPI) is an
innovative global organization that uses the
game of basketball to unite and educate
young Catholic and Protestant children in
Northern Ireland.
The American Ireland
Fund made a gift of $1 million to
PeacePlayers to trible the number of children
in its program in Northern Ireland and, in
particular, establish a basketball camp
during Northern Ireland’s marching season
when sectarianism is heightened. • more >
In 2006, The Ireland Funds partnered with Sesame Workshop to create
26 episodes of Sesame Street especially for Northern Ireland. Spreading

world. The 26 episodes and now broadcasting and are accompanied by
outreach materials and programs for schools and parents. The Ireland
Funds donated $1 million to the venture. © 2006 Sesame Workshop All rights reserved. • more >
