This year's Melbourne event was held in brilliant
sunshine on the bank of the Yarra River within sight
of St Patrick's Cathedral, the city's 'Irish cathedral'
that will always be associated with Charleville born
archbishop Daniel Mannix (1864-1963).
Melbourne's noted rivalry with Sydney came to the fore
during the afternoon's auctions when a round trip to
Ireland for two reached a total price of Au$33,750
- the trip was bought first time for Au$17,000 by Hugh
Hannigan who reofferred the prize for a second auction
that went for Au$16,750 to Reg Brownell. The process
was repeated moments later when Fergus Ryan paid Au$5,000
for a trip on the yacht, 'Sydney' and then reofferred
the prize: The trip sold a second time for Au$4,990.
AIF Melbourne councillor Kevin Luscombe AM and Ted
Johnson welcomed the large crowd to the lunch that
was entertained by the Irish folk quartet Inish and
singer Bernadette Robinson. Also in attendance were
Tom O'Brien from the Oceanis group, Brendan Donohoe
from Bank of Ireland Asset Management and the Lord
Mayor of Melbourne John So.
