National Report - William J. Neill, Chairman
As Chairman I have the privilege to present a yearly overview
to our donors and our friends. I am happy to report that
2002 was a wonderful year to be a part of The Ireland Fund
of Canada. This year began with an incredible concert by
Altan at Torontos historic Massey Hall. The traditional
Irish group had the audience under their spell by the end
of the evening. Toe-tapping and thunderous applause showed
the members of Altan that they had surely gained Torontos
approval. Thanks again to National Board Member Daithi Connaughton
for taking the lead on this project.
The 19th Annual St. Patricks Luncheon at the Metro
Toronto Convention Centre saw Paddy Doherty and Glen Barr
win the hearts of all 1,400 of our guests. Also in attendance
was actor Frank Kelly of Father Ted fame. Special
thanks to our volunteers, who made the afternoon so memorable
for our guests.
Both the Ottawa and Edmonton Chapters should certainly
be proud of their respective Emerald Ball events. The support
that they receive from their communities is truly remarkable.
Look forward to the 2003 Ottawa and Edmonton Emerald Balls
neither of which should be missed.
The 6th Annual John Dunne Golf Classic was held again at
Nobleton Lakes Golf Club. For those of you who joined us
this year I am sure that you had as much fun off the course
enjoying some great Irish camaraderie as you did on it.
A great many thanks to our Patron, John Dunne for his continued
support and to The Great Atlantic & Pacific Company
of Canada for helping to make this day a true golf classic.
The 2002 Toronto Emerald Ball was a great way for The Ireland
Fund of Canada to conclude our events for the year. Very
special thanks to the Emerald Ball Chair Sue Storey and
Mark and Greta Brennan for all of their hard work and to
General John and MaryAnn de Chastelain, Gord Martineau and
Tenor Michael Colvin.
The 2003 Ireland Fund of Canada events calendar has a few
new additions. Please join us for a wonderful night with
Colm Wilkinson & Friends in Concert on February 28th
at Roy Thomson Hall. Also, Day at the Races
has been scheduled for June 6th at Woodbine Racetrack. We
hope that this will be the first of many races to come.
Lastly, I have some sad news to report. Melanie Hurley
has left her position as the Executive Director at The Ireland
Fund of Canada. Melanies new position as President
of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences
will be challenging, but anyone who knows Melanie knows
how much she enjoys a challenge. Melanie, you will be sadly
missed by your colleagues in Canada and worldwide. Best
wishes on your new journey.
