Conference in Dublin drew over 200 delegates from ten branches
of The Worldwide Ireland Funds.

The Conference focused on grants with participants
brought to see firsthand a variety of the projects
we fund.
A Welcome Reception was held at the historic Gate
Theatre in Dublin, where delegates were treated to
An evening with Oscar Wilde, which included
a presentation by Merlin Holland, grandson of Oscar.
It was then on to the spectacular Pillar Rooms for
supper.
Conference delegates visited several projects the
next morning, including Fatima Groups United, Energy
Action, Fettercairn Youth Horse Project, The Special
Olympics World Games and Belvedere Youth Club.
They personally saw the progress made and where the
Funds make a difference.
Other Conference highlights included the presentation
by actor and Ireland Funds supporter John Hurt and
Worldwide Chairman Sir Anthony OReilly of the
31st Annual Literary Award to Westmeath-born poet
and novelist Dermot Healy, and of course the Projects
Fair, in which over 30 projects displayed some of
the work they have done with grants from Ireland Funds
donors.
A symposium exploring the challenges and obstacles
to building reconciliation and a new society in Northern
Ireland was held the next day at the National Museum
Northern Ireland: The Way Forward.
This involved key figures and grantees presenting
with Advisory Committee member Olivia OLeary
heading up the panel. That night the delegates attended
the Gala Black Tie Closing Dinner at the Royal Hospital
Kilmainham.
With entertainment from both Macnas and Irish musicians
The Chieftains and the traditional after-party in
the Shelbourne hotel, the Conference 2002 was a resounding
success.
