The
Franco-Irish Literary Festival April
2007
Pierre Joannon, The President of The Ireland
Fund of France, served on a panel of writers
at The Franco-Irish Literary Festival in April.
The event, organized by the Cultural Service
of the French Embassy and Alliance Française
was held at Dublin Castle. As one of the premiere
French specialists on Ireland Pierre has published
ten historical and political works including
the recent Histoire de L’Irlande et des
Irlandais.
Pierre Joannon, Chairman
of the Ireland Fund of France, is a highly regarded
historian who, having published a dozen books
on the history of Ireland, North and South, has
also edited for three decades the most respected
scholarly journal of Irish studies in France.
Histoire de l'Irlande et
des Irlandais
He recently published a
seven hundred page Histoire de l'Irlande et des
Irlandais which has been acclaimed as the most
authoritative source of reference on the subject
published in France. The work covers the history
of Ireland from the Celtic dawn to the final
dismantling of the IRA weaponry in July 2005.
The influential national
daily paper "le Figaro" has written
that "apart from it's remarkable literary
style, the strength of this book resides in the
fact that it avoids the pitfalls of nationalist
mythologization and British complacency".
As such, it aims at promoting the necessary reconciliation
between the various traditions who share the
island of Ireland.
In that spirit of accommodation,
Pierre Joannon had the honour of presenting a
copy of his book to the President of Ireland
Mary McAleese at a reception in Aras an Uachtarain,
attended by the French Ambassador and several
members of the French Press. |
