About the IFGB

Charitable Trust

Established in 1988, The Ireland Fund of Great Britain distributes funds to community organisations across the UK whose focus is to support those of Irish descent who are in health, housing, social or psychological need.

Current Focus

Our current focus is to raise substantial funds and awareness for the vulnerable and elderly Irish in the UK.

The IFGB Board

The IFGB is run by an IFGB Board of volunteers and co-chaired by Basil Geoghegan and Ruth McCarthy.

The Team

Based in offices in London Bridge there is a small administrative team who each have a unique role within The IFGB:

Elaine Meade Hill – Events & Membership

Born in Limerick, Elaine joined The IFGB in October 2007.She co-ordinates our annual gala events such as the Winter Ball and The Forgotten Irish Award. Elaine also co-ordinates our exclusive IFGB Members’ Network events.

Laura Quinn – Grants & Alumni

Holding a degree in Social Policy and Social Anthropology from Queens University Belfast, Laura co-ordinates our grants programmes, research projects, project visits and assessments. She also matches our supporters with volunteer positions in local projects. Laura also manages our special relationships with partnership organisations, alumni groups and special relations with organisations who choose The IFGB as a focus Charity.

Louisa Hancox – Forgotten Irish Campaign

Louisa joined The IFGB in June 2004. Working part-time, Louisa is managing our Campain to support the vulnerable and eldery Irish community in the UK.

How We Are Helping

In 2009, The IFGB distributed over £500,000 to community organisations across the UK that seek to address the needs of the ‘forgotten Irish.’

This is the largest grant round The IFGB has ever distributed to date, supporting  nearly 50 organisations in cities like Leeds, London, Manchester, Glasgow, Birmingham, Nottingham, and Newcastle.

How we raise funds

The IFGB does not receive or seek to receive government funding and we rely on donations from private individuals, corporations and other non-statutory sources. We host fundraising events, prize draws and auctions all proceeds of which go toward our Grant Rounds.

We are grateful to all our Corporate Partners who have given generously. Their contribution ensures that the maximum amount of your donation goes directly to the organisations we support, rather than on administration and fundraising costs.

What do we do with the money we raise?

The IFGB invites charities, community groups and voluntary organisations to apply for a grant from The IFGB, usually on an annual basis. These Grants are used to fund organisations that provide essential services to members of the Irish community across the UK. Grants are only distributed following a thorough assessment of all applications by our Grants Assessment Committee.
