Terry Wogan Golf Tournament : Friday 9th September 2005

As the sun rose over the dew-spangled greens of historic Moor Park Golf Club on Friday the 9 th of September, some nine million Britons tuned in as usual to ‘Wake Up To Wogan’ on BBC Radio 2, only to learn from Terry Wogan that this was no ordinary day – for it was the day of The Ireland Fund of Great Britain’s annual golf tournament, hosted by none other than Terry Wogan himself. Terry was generous in his mention and praise of the work of The IFGB and even dared to share with the nation his hopes and dreams of leading his team to victory. (Alas, the scorecards would tell another story, in spite of the best efforts of his team; football legend Niall Quinn, sports commentator and former Ryder Cup referee Alex Hay and Terry’s on-air cohort and producer, Paul Walters.)

Fortunately for those who managed to get a ticket for this exclusive event, his bad luck on the fairways did not effect Terry’s performance as chairman of the event committee which raised a record breaking £45,000 in profits. This is a staggering amount given that the tournament is strictly limited to one hundred or so players and guests. Much of the credit and thanks must go to sponsors Anglo Irish Bank, Ballymore Properties and Doonbeg Golf Club, and also to committee members Ruairi Conneely and Paul Brennan.

Players came from as far afield as Dublin, Clare, Birmingham and the London area, and included teams from both Irish and British based companies such as A & L Goodbody, Clancy Docwra Ltd, The Ardmore Group, Ruddy, Jones Lang Lasalle and Tourism Ireland. Other long-standing Ireland Fund supporters were also present, including Tom Gallagher (Council member of The IFGB and the man behind The American Ireland Fund’s Dallas golf event), John Kennedy from Manchester and IFGB Trustee The Hon. Kevin Pakenham.

First prize and the Tourism Ireland Trophy were fiercely contested, but Andrew Coville’s team from Ballymore Properties managed to pip Tom Gallagher’s team to the post. Third place went to Anglo Irish Bank’s team captained by David Murray. Every member of the winning teams was presented with a spectacular crystal bowl designed by Louise Kennedy and generously donated by Tipperary Crystal. Other prize donors included The PGA European Tour, ProQuip, Lacoste, TaylorMade, Hattie Smart and The Merrion, Dublin.
