The Ireland Fund of Great Britain was honoured to have President McAleese as Guest of Honour at the launch of The Forgotten Irish Campaign on June 15th at London’s Dorchester Hotel.  Some 350 supporters were present to hear President McAleese speak movingly about the challenges and the achievements of the Irish, particularly those who came to Britain in search of work in the latter half of the 20th century.

The audience was also addressed by Peter Sutherland, Chairman of The Ireland Fund of Great Britain, who urged us to remember the elderly and vulnerable Irish in Britain whose hard labour formed the bedrock of Ireland’s current prosperity.

He also paid tribute to Invest Northern Ireland who have sponsored the event for the past two years, and thanked Independent News & Media for their ongoing support of IFGB events.

Guests viewed a short film depicting some of the problems and difficulties faced by The Forgotten Irish in Britain.  This film was later presented at Ireland Funds Conference in Kenmare and can be viewed here.

To date , The Forgotten Irish Campaign has raised just over £1 million sterling which will ultimately be distributed to projects supporting the elderly and vulnerable Irish in Britain, and elderly Irish emigrants who seek to return to Ireland.
