"If
you want to be important - that's wonderful.
If you want to be great - that's wonderful. But
recognize that he who is greatest among you shall
be your servant. That's your new definition of
greatness - it means that
everybody can be great because everybody can serve.
You don't have to know
about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have
to know the second law of
thermodynamics to serve. You only need a heart full
of grace, a soul
generated by love..."
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
It was standing room only
in the Thomas Davis Theatre at Trinity College
Dublin on Friday, 20th April 2007 as Suas Educational
Development presented the “Extraordinary
Lives: Leaders who Serve” lecture.
This annual
event presents a space for leaders from all walks
of life to reflect and share their personal views
and experiences of leadership; the journey they have
taken and the challenges they have faced along the
way.
The lecture was chaired
by RTE News Anchor, Mr. Bryan Dobson and featured
Mr. Peter Sutherland, UN Special Representative
for Migration and Development, former Director
General of the WTO and Chairman of The Ireland
Fund of Great Britain and Mary Lawlor, Founder
of Front Line – the
International Foundation for the protection of Human
Rights Defenders.
Front Line was recently
awarded the 2006-2007 King Baudouin International
Development Prize “ for the effectiveness
of their efforts to combat the isolation faced by
human rights defenders around the world, for the
support and protection that they offer them, and
for their continuing advocacy in favour of an international
plan of action for human rights, which is an essential
condition for development."
