Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to our 2004 biennial celebration.

The Ireland Fund of Monaco has been promoting Hiberno-Monegasque relations for seven years, the last two years of which have been very rewarding. The Ireland Fund of Monaco is proud to announce a very special event; the inauguration of the Princess Grace Humanitarian Award on September 18th at a Gala Dinner in the Hotel de Paris, Monte-Carlo. Princess Grace is Ireland's favourite daughter remembered with deep respect and enormous affection. The Princess Grace Humanitarian Award was conceived to acknowledge and celebrate the achievement of an outstanding Irish person with an award carrying the name of Her Royal Highness. By definition this would become one of the most prized awards Irish people could aspire to.

The winner of the first award is Mr. Bill Cullen and we have invited a member of the ruling family to present this prestigious prize of €20,000 together with the superb limited edition sculpture by the renowned artist Kees Verkade. Bill Cullen is the Director of the Irish Youth Foundation which raises £1 million a year for youth projects in Ireland. Bill was one of fourteen children born in the inner tenements of Dublin to a working class family. In spite of leaving school at 13 to work on the steets he managed to forge a career in the automobile industry which culminated in the position of Chairman and owner of Renault Ireland. His best-selling autobiography "It's a long way from Penny Apples" retraces his life from his beginnings as a little boy in the slums of Dublin to becoming one of Ireland's most inspirational business leaders.

Keen to protect existing Irish writing and promoting new writing, the Ireland Fund of Monaco has established residential bursaries to enable literary and academic writers born or living in Ireland to pursue a current project during a one-month residency at the Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco. In 2002 the Library welcomed poet, literary author, and university professor Eoin McNamee and academic Angela Bourke, Professor of Literature at Dublin University. 2004 hosted the author Molly McCloskey and multi-faceted Fred Johnston: poet, novelist, critic, and musician. Each writer gave talks to captive audiences at the Princess Grace Irish Library and met with language students at the Lycée Albert 1er in Monaco, who were delighted to be able to meet authors of literature they were studying. The works took on a new meaning.

On 5th October 2002 The Ireland Fund of Monaco was honoured to present The Ireland Fund of Monaco Literary Award in Memory of Princess Grace to writer Colum McCann, winner of several literary awards and short-listed for the Booker Prize. His novel "Songdogs" was adapted to screen. Colum is a young man of immense charm and extraordinary ability, destined to become one of Ireland's greatwriters. We are delighted to have been involved, in no matter how small a way, in the development of his career.

On a more worldwide note The Ireland Fund of Monaco continues to support the development of EIRData, the only Irish literary website containing information on over 4000 Irish writers. This is a joint project together with the Princess Grace Irish Library and University of Ulster, under the leadeship of Dr. Bruce Stewart, Literary Advisor to the Library. The Website has proved an extraordinary tool, consulted by universities, students, and scholars from across the globe, avid for information on Irish literature.

2002 saw the emergence of a new interest: horse riding, another great Irish tradition. The Ireland Fund of Monaco invited riders from the Irish Academy Equitation School to the 8th International Jumping of Monaco where they did exceedingly well. Lt. Col. Gerry Mullins led his team of two riders, Lt. David O'Brien and Lt. Shane Carey. Lt. Shane Carey won the Liebherr and Thermes Marins Prizes and Lt. David O'Brien came 4th in the Grand Prix in a field of 35 riders from all over the world. This was so succesful The Ireland Fund of Monaco has decided to renew the invitation annually.

Prompted by her Royal Highness Princess Caroline's suggestion, with an eye to young talent, The Ireland Fund of Monaco has provided for young Monegasque riders a visit to Ireland for special training under the guidance of Mr. Paul Darragh at Waterside Stud in Co. Meath. 4 riders aged 19 to 20: Diane Dupont, Maude Raimbert, Sophie Giordano, and Wenceslas Thomel spent three weeks at Waterside returning absolutely enchanted after their experience. Apart from the excellent riding tuition and being able to practice their English and other languages due to the international nature of the stud, they were also invited to the Dublin Horse Show. They left the stud with much emotion bidding their wonderful hosts farewell, but richer for their experience.I close with heartfelt thanks from The Ireland Fund of Monaco for all your support. We do however need to continue to raise funds for EIRData and its ongoing development, our residential bursaries, our Monegasque and Irish riders and of course any new ideas to take forward our efforts to protect and promote Irish culture, to help young people from both countries to spend time with each other and learn about our respective cultures.

Le Ireland Fund de Monaco développe les relations Hiberno-Monegasques depuis 7 ans, dont les deux derniers furent très satisfaisants. Le Ireland Fund of Monaco est fier d'annoncer un événement très particulier; l'inauguration le 18 septembre pour une Soirée de Gala à l'Hôtel de Paris, Monte-Carlo, du Princess Grace Humanitarian Award (Prix Humanitaire Princesse Grace. Princesse Grace tient une place privilégiée dans le coeur des Irlandais qui lui portent un profond respect et une grande affection. Le Princess Grace Humanitarian Award fut concu afin de reconnaitre et de célébrer l'accomplissement d'une personne exceptionnelle d'origine irlandaise. Le prix décerné est donc au nom de son Altesse Sérénissime. Par définition ceci deviendra le prix le plus prisé que les irlandais puissent ambitionner.

Le premier prix sera attribué a Monsieur Bill Cullen. Nous avons demandé à un membre de la famille princière de présenter ce prix prestigieux de €20,000 ainsi qu'une sculpture, en tirage limité, du sculpteur de renom international, Kees Verkade. Bill Cullen est Directeur du Irish Youth Foundation (Fondation de la Jeunesse Irlandaise) qui collecte £1 million par an pour des projets de soutien de jeunes irlandais. Bill est issu d'une famille ouvrière de 14 enfants nés dans les quartiers pauvres de Dublin. Malgré le fait d'avoir quitte l'école a 13 ans pour travailler dans le rue il a réussi une carrière brillante dans i'industrie de l'automobile, terminant à ce jour par le poste de propriétaire et Président de Renault Ireland. Son autobiographie "It's a Long Way From Penny Apples" (Loin sont les jours des pommes a 1 penny) retrace sa vie dès ses débuts dans les logements déshérités de Dublin jusqu'à ce jour où il est devenu un des dirigeants irlandais qui suscite autant d'inspiration.

Soucieux de protéger la littérature irlandaise et de promouvoir de nouveaux écrivains, le Ireland Fund of Monaco a établi des bourses résidentielles pour permettre a des écrivains littéraires et académiques nés ou résident en Irlande de poursuivre un projet en cours pendant un mois base à la Princess Grace Irish Library à Monaco. En 2002 la Bibliotheque a accueilli le poete, auteur littéraire, et professeur universitaire Eoin McNamee et académique Angela Bourke, professeur de littérature a l'Université de Dublin. En 2004 l'auteur Molly McCloskey et le talentueux Fred Johnston; poète, romancier, critique, et musicien ont été recus. Chaque écrivain donna un discours au membres de la Bibliotheque Irlandaise et a rencontré des étudiants en langues du Lycée Albert 1er à Monaco, qui furent ravi de pouvoir rencontrer les auteurs d'oeuvres qu'ils étudiaient. La littérature prenait un nouveau sens.

Colum est un jeune homme charmant et de talent extraordinaire, destiné à devenir un des grands écrivains irlandais. Nous sommes fiers d'avoir participé, même de façon minime, au développement de sa carrière.

Sur une note plus globale le Ireland Fun of Monaco continue à soutenir le développement de EIRData, le seul site Web irlandais contenant des informations sur plus de 4000 écrivains irlandais en collaboration avec la Bibliothèque irlandaise et l'Université d'Ulster sous la direction du Dr. Bruce Stewart, Conseiller Littéraire à la Bibliothèque. Le site Web est un outil d'exception, consulté par des universitaires et étudiants à travers le monde, avide d'information sur la littéraire irlandaise.

2002 a vu la naissance d'une nouvelle idée: l'équitation, une autre grande tradition irlandaise. Le Ireland Fund of Monaco invita trois cavaliers du Army Equitation School au 8ème Jumping International de Monaco où ils réussissent brillamment. Lt. Col. Gerry Mullins mena son équipe de deux cavaliers, Lt. David O'Brien et Lt. Shane Carey. Lt. Shane Carey gagna le Prix Liebherr et Le Prix Thermes Marins et Lt. David O'Brien obtint 4ème place au Grand Prix parmi 35 cavaliers internationaux. Ceci fut une si belle réussite que le Ireland Fund of Monaco decida de la renouveler chaque année.

D'après une suggestion de son Altesse Royal la Princesse Caroline, soucieus de promouvoir le jeune talent, le Ireland Fund of Monaco a proposé aux jeunes cavaliers monégasques d'effectuer un stage d'équitation sous l'égide de Monsieur Paul Darragh au Waterside Stud à County Meath en Irlande. Quatre cavaliers âgés de 19 à 20 ans: Diane Dupont, Maude Raimbert, Sophie Giordano, et Wenceslas Thomel ont passé trois semaines a Waterside. Ils sont rentrés absolument enchantés apres leur expérience. Non seulement l'enseignement fut excellent mais les cavaliers ont pu pratiquer l'anglais ainsi que d'autres langues vu la nature international du haras mais ils furent invités au Dublin Horse Show. Ils ont quitte l'écurie et leurs hotes avec beaucoup d'émotion, mais riches d'expériences.

Je termine avec mes remerciements ainsi que celles du Ireland Fund of Monaco pour votre soutien. Nous devons cependant continuer à récolter des fonds pour la projet EIRData et son développement, nos bourses littéraires, nos cavalirs irlandais et monégasques et bien sur pour de nouveaux projets où nous seront emmenés a protéger et promouvoir la culture irlandaise dans le but d'aider des jeunes des deux pays à se cotoyer pour échanger le goût pour leurs cultures respectives.
