On the 3rd November 2006 a Galfcuig competition
was held at Takapuna Golf Course situated on the
North Shore in Auckland. Galfcuig is based on teams
of five players; each has only one golf club with
each team only allowed to use one ball. As each team
plays each hole, the players must play in the same
sequence. This creates great fun and frivolity and
this year’s competition, once again, did not
disappoint those who participated.
A major highlight for those lucky enough to enter
the competition was to meet the newly appointed Ambassador
of Ireland His Excellency Mr Máirtín Ó Fainín
and his wife Anne who were visiting New Zealand to
present the Ambassador’s credentials to the
New Zealand Governor General. Other highlights included
a BBQ dinner and auction later in the day. Auction
items sold and ticket sales for the competition contributed
towards a $7100 profit for the day.
Winners of the competition were “Team Foss” who
miraculously scored 98, a gallant effort considering
the restrictions of the day’s competition.
The team members were Simon Johnston, Gael McNally,
Paul Robertson and Charles Maud and of course George
Foss, Trustee of the Ireland Fund of New Zealand.
The winning prize was a 4.5 litre bottle of Jameson’s
whiskey.
