The
Ireland Fund of New Zealand was proud to fund development
of a website for the Letterkenny Rugby Football Club
based in Donegal, Ireland.
The Club developed the website to honour Irish born
Dave Gallaher who captained the first New Zealand
All Blacks team when it toured Europe in 1905. Gallaher
was born in Ramelton near Letterkenny in Ireland
and this is where the connection to Letterkenny,
County Donegal originates.

In addition to the Commemoration Project, the Club
also wished to boost interest in rugby in County
Donegal, especially to bring it to a new generation
of players by raising its profile and to raise sponsorship
for youth training facilities at the Club’s
new pitch.
Further to the website project, in November 2005
the Club was very fortunate to have members of the
New Zealand Rugby Union and representatives of the
2005 visiting All Blacks team visit Donegal to launch
the clubs new club crest which is based on Gallaher
and to unveil a plaque at Gallaher’s birthplace.
Rodney Walshe, Founding Trustee of the Ireland Fund
of New Zealand made the trip from meetings in Dublin
to attend the day and was honoured to witness such
a special occasion to honour a historic connection
between Ireland and New Zealand.
