The Ireland Fund of New Zealand has funded the ongoing
cataloguing and conservation work being undertaken
to ensure an important collection of over 800 Irish
books are able to be shared with the Auckland, New
Zealand and International public.
The project came about from the 2005 donation of
the collection by John Stacpoole, an architect, architectural
historian and author. His family originates from
Ireland and John had taken more than sixty years
to build this collection of Irish books.
The Library initially staged an exhibition titled
Ireland: a personal view. Its people and places,
literature and arts. The books on display included
many first editions and a number of books from the
17th and 18th centuries and this latest project is
merely to ensure the collection remains a valuable
resource for New Zealand’s literary future.
