Young Rugby Player Exchange
between Letterkenny Rugby Football Club, Co Donegal, Ireland and Ponsonby Rugby Football Club, Auckland, New Zealand
During the visit of the
New Zealand All Blacks to Ireland in November
2005, a small party of senior members visited
Letterkenny in Co. Donegal to mark the birthplace
of Dave Gallaher, captain of the first All Blacks.
Following this visit an
exchange programme was introduced to honour Gallaher’s memory.
This year two rugby players,
Eoghan O’Rian and Brendan Smith, from Letterkenny RFC were guests of Ponsonby RFC. Following the success of that visit for the first time two rugby players Simon Thorp and Derek Jannings, from Ponsonby RFC travelled to Ireland and were guests of Letterkenny RFC.
The Ireland Fund of New
Zealand is pleased to continue its support of
this cross-cultural exchange between the two
countries.
