"Two years ago, as part of The American Ireland Funds
delegation to its annual Worldwide Conference, I visited
the Hazelwood Integrated College, a secondary school, located
in a heavily sectarian section of Belfast, that educates
both Catholic and Protestant children.
A decade earlier,
a grant from the AIF was used as seed money to establish
the schoolthe first of what has become a thriving
alternative to traditionally segregated education in Northern
Irelandand an effective grass roots response to the
generations-long Troubles. Thanks to Funds
support of integrated education, thousands of children like
those we met at Hazelwood have been able to overstep the
deep divisions that still abound in Northern Ireland.
This experience, and scores more like it, continues to
galvanize my belief in and support of The American Ireland
Fund. I have long supported the AIF annually and most recently
with a special gift to the Hope & History Capital Campaign.
So when it came time to arrange my financial and estate
plans, I decided to become a member of the Heritage Society
by remembering the AIF in my will. It was extremely important
to me that my estate plans also include the AIF in order
to reflect my lifelong dedication to its mission.
My intended bequest will be used to fund projects like
the Hazelwood School. It gives me great joy to know that
The American Ireland Fund will continue its important work
for many years to come."
