Mr. Murphy is the Founder and Provost of the Order of
the Winegeese, based in Desmond Castle, Kinsale, Co. Cork.
DAY ONE - BORDEAUX - SUNDAY, JUNE 13
Château de Goulaine |
Arrival
in Bordeaux France, at Mérignac International
Airport.
Accommodation at Hôtel Burdigala, ideally situated
in the center of the city. Day at leisure to explore Bordeaux's
mediaeval streets, once the home of Eleanor of Aquitaine.
7.00PM Private dinner at Frank
Jackson's Connemara Irish Pub& Restaurant in Bordeaux.
(Mr. Jackson is a cousin of Terry Cross, owner of Château de La Ligne).
Mr. Ted Murphy, the noted wine historian and honorary
Chairman of the Winegeese Society, will discuss the role of the
Irish in the Bordeaux wine industry.

DAY TWO
- BORDEAUX - MONDAY, JUNE 14
9.00AM
Depart Hôtel Burdigala
for a private morning tour of
Château MacCarthy and Château Haut-Marbuzet.
The MacCarthy family home was Castle
Cloghan, near the town of Skibbereen. After the collapse
of the Jacobite cause
he sought refuge in France, eventually settling in the city of
Bordeaux. In 1719 Denis married Jane Fitzgerald, daughter of
a prosperous Waterford merchant who was also trading at
Bordeaux. He founded the mercantile house later to be known
as 'MacCarthy Frères'. It was to become one of the leading
wine concerns and traded successfully for more than 100 years.
11.30AM Tour of Château Léoville-Barton,
on the outskirts of the
Médocain town of St. Julien Beychevelle
2.00PM Tour and lunch at Château Langoa with Mr.
Anthony Barton
and family, 6th generation of the Kildare, Ireland family in
Saint-Julien.
Grandson of Thomas Barton,
founder of Barton & Guestier,
Hugh Barton consolidated the considerable family fortune.
After having to flee France during the Revolution, he returned
to his home country, Ireland. Having acquired Château Langoa
in 1821, Barton bought part of Château Léoville in 1826 and
called it Léoville Barton. Since that date, this vineyard has
always belonged to the same family.
Anthony was born and raised in Ireland. He grew up on his
family estate, Straffan House in Kildare, now the K Club.

dinner at Château de
La Ligne hosted
by Adèle Kane and Terry Cross with special guests
from
Northern Ireland.
Induction into the Winegeese Society of The Ireland Funds by
the honorary chairman of the Society Mr. Ted Murphy and
co-chairs Mr. John Tillotson and Mr. Ken Gorman.
DAY THREE
- BORDEAUX - TUESDAY, JUNE 15
9.30AM
Morning visit to Château
Margaux in the southern
Haut-Médoc.
Château Margaux was controlled
by Richard Gernon, a
member of a distinguished Drogheda family, who had
established in the wine business at Bordeaux at the turn of the
17th century. Other Irish families who held leases on the
property over the next fifteen years included the MacCarthy
brothers from Cork, the Johnston family from Armagh, the
Barton family from Kildare and the Fosters from Dublin. All
these were distinguished Wine Merchants, trading on
Bordeaux's Quai de Chartrons.
12.00PM Lunch at Château
Magnol (owned by Barton and Guestier,
part of the Diageo group) near Blanquefort.
7.30PM Dinner at the oldest restaurant
in Bordeaux, Le Chapon Fin,
considered one of the best restaurants in all of southwest
France. Wines donated by Jean Michel Cazes of Lynch-Bages.
DAY FOUR - BORDEAUX - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16
10.00AM Departure for Airport to Nantes.
1.00PM Arrival at the Grand
Hôtel Mercure. Afternoon
at leisure to
explore Nantes.
6.30PM Visit to Château
de Goulaine, home of Robert, the 11th
Marquis of Goulaine. Descended from the Mediaeval Kings of
France, the Goulaine family has been in the wine trade for
over 1,000 years.
Beginning with a visit to the butterfly farm with the Marquis, the group will
then visit the Lu Collection, a permanent exhibition of the famous biscuit
factory with over 500 works of art.
8.00PM The Winegeese Banquet
at Château de Goulaine.
The party
will be joined by the Marquis and Marquise de Goulaine.
DAY FIVE - BORDEAUX - THURSDAY, JUNE 17
9.00AM Morning departure for Bordeaux.
Afternoon at leisure.
8.00PM Dinner at the Primrose Club
hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lawton. Abraham
Lawton from Skibbereen in West Cork
settled in Bordeaux where he
established the wine-broking house of
Tastet et Lawton in 1739.
DAY SIX - DUBLIN - FRIDAY, JUNE 18

Early departure to Dublin for The Worldwide Ireland Funds
