June 21st 2007 was the inaugural
WineGeese Ireland dinner.
This took place in the glorious surroundings
of Carton House, one of Ireland’s foremost
Palladian treasures, and historically the great
countryseat of the FitzGeralds, the Earls of
Kildare.
Lee and Mary Mallaghan have magnificently restored
this incredible property and we are truly grateful
to them for allowing us the privilege of holding
this event in such historic surroundings.
Ken Gorman and John Sharkey
as Chairmen of the Society together with Ted
Murphy, Honorary Chairman, personally greeted
every guest as they were announced by the Herald
of Arms for the evening. New members to be inducted
into the society were Michael Bailey, Terry Browne,
Joe and Rose Corcoran, Margaret Hayhurst, Robert
McDonough, Lee and Mary Mallaghan, Paddy and
Bernadette Shanahan.
Honorary members
inducted were: Maurice Hayes, Frederic
Hennessy, Kerry and Margie Murphy.
We were privileged to have
as honored guests WineGeese vineyard owners,
Terry and Adèle Cross of Belfast and Bordeaux,
the Marquis de Goulaine from the Loire Valley,
Frederic Hennessy from Cognac who is restoring
the old family castle in Cork, Kerry Murphy of
DuMOL Winery in the Russian River Valley, California.
Thanks to their generosity the evening was enhanced
by their excellent wines and spirits.
Each shared their Irish
connection and their wines. Ken Gorman, Kieran
McLoughlin, Ted Murphy, and John Sharkey introduced
the honored guests. Loretta Brennan Glucksman
spoke about the impact of the Funds on Ireland
and in particular about their contribution to
the peace process in the north of Ireland. Kingsley
Aikins, CEO of The Ireland Funds, concluded the
memorable evening with a major thank you to John
Sharkey, Ted Murphy, and Ken Gorman for all they
have done to promote this aspect of Irish history
and culture. In particular, he commended Dr.
Ted Murphy for winning the Gourmand Award for
best wine history in any language for his book A
Kingdom of Wine: A Celebration of Ireland’s
Winegeese. |
