crawford municipal
art gallery
The Crawford Municipal Art Gallery is one of Cork's most
important public buildings. The older part of the structure
dates from 1724 and was the Custom House for Cork until
1818. Afterwards it housed the Royal Cork Institution and
its art classes for two decades, before becoming a school
of design in 1850.
In addition to an art school, the
gallery houses works from important Irish artists in the
collection
such as James Barry, Nathaniel Grogan, Walter Osborne,
Paul Henry, Jack B. Yeats, Harry Clarke and Sean Keating.
The gallery
offers third level courses in Fine Arts, Ceramic Design
and Art Teacher training. Assistance from The Ireland
Funds has aided their scholarship program which is awarded
to the outstanding graduate of the Crawford College proceeding
to post-graduate study. The Gallery was also supported
in its youth education outreach program for “Picasso:
Drawings, 1896-1934” -an exhibit of 60 pieces. This
program reached children at over 200 primary schools in
Offaly, Galway, Dublin, Belfast, and all of Munster.
“Our goal is to have a full-time,
year-round education programme encompassing a wide demographic.
The American Ireland Fund can further assist the programme
by aligning the gallery with companies and patrons who
are supportive of outreach programmes and the positive
effects they have on their participants.”
