Now operated by the Benedictine Nuns, Kylemore Abbey was originally built as a Castle in 1868. One of the best examples
of Irish neo-gothic architecture, the estate features include
a Victorian Walled Garden, restored Abbey reception rooms,
a Gothic Church and tranquil landscaped grounds. In addition
it houses an international all girls boarding school. Kylemore
Abbey is guided by the Benedictine Principles of providing
education, through it's girl's school; hospitality to the
traveler, through its tourist amenities, preserved buildings
and Victorian walled Gardens and the opportunity for Contemplation
and Personal Reflection with the upkeep of its beautiful
surrounds. Kylemore is a national architectural landmark
and is the single largest employer in Connemara.

An abbey
operated by the Benedictine Nuns that houses a craft shop,
a restaurant, and an international all-girls boarding school.
Funding is used to restore and reinstall the Victorian
Walled Garden.
“The American Ireland Fund
has been an essential partner in our efforts to reconstruct
and restore this beautiful haven in rural Connemara. The
size of our undertakings is far beyond our means, and we
have had to rely on charitable help from our friends in
America and elsewhere. The AIF has been instrumental in
identifying potential supporters for a charitable cause
such as ours, helping us with our fundraising approach
in many ways, and in processing tax-effective gifts from
American supporters.”
