Established in 1982 by a group including members of two local churches, the 174 Trust aims to address the problems facing those in the community, namely issues facing those living in a socially and economically deprived area.

In addition to the poverty of the area, the Troubles have also had a major impact. Twenty percent of all murders during the last 30 years of the Troubles have occurred within a one-mile radius of the Trust, an area that is often referred to as "Murder Mile".

174 TrustThe 174 Trust is committed to a process of community development based on building relationships with local people, working together to identify and meet local needs.

The Trust facilitates a myriad of social groups and projects within the community.

The Trust also addresses the issues of older people in the community, as well as organizing social outings for the older population.

Bill Shaw, 174 Trust "Every Saturday night over
140 older people from the area
come for a social - they come for a Dance.
It's the highlight of their week
and that makes a big difference
to their outlook on life."

- Bill Shaw, 174 Trust

Support from The American Ireland Fund has helped the Trust continue their pre-school program as well as a summer program for local children.

The aim of the school is to promote education about history, folklore, and drama through the Irish language, regardless of the children's class, religion or background.
