National Gallery of Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland houses the nation's most
important collection of Irish and European paintings dating
from the 14th to the 20th century and includes all the major
Continental Schools. Irish painting is charted from its
re-emergence in the 17th century to Jack B. Yeats, Ireland's
most important 20th century artist.
Irish artists include Yeats, Osborne, O'Connor and Leech.
The collection includes many masterpieces including works
by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Goya, Vermeer, Poussin and Picasso.
The Gallery has added a new Millennium Wing to the present
historic building The new 4,000sq m wing, designed by award
winning architects, Benson & Forsyth (Royal Museum of
Scotland, in Edinburgh), will provide a spacious entrance
for the public at Clare Street in the heart of the city.
Part of the new accommodation in the Millennium Wing includes
a suite of galleries featuring 20th century Irish paintings
(1900-1950), major international exhibitions, the permanent
collection and the Center for the Study of Irish Art among
other facilities.
Since 1999 The Worldwide Ireland Funds have supported
the extension of the National Gallery of Ireland with a
major gift of more than $380,000.
