Bertie Ahern (Taoiseach) speaks with Springboard participants on completion of their program

Springboard is a cross-community, cross-border organization established in 1992 to build the capacity of disadvantaged people in the economically deprived communities of Belfast. Its focus lies in working within these communities, both Protestant and Catholic, which have also been heavily affected by the Troubles.

"The ultimate dream is that there
would be peace & reconciliation
in Northern Ireland,
and without organizations like
The Ireland Funds that would
be a difficult journey."
- Angila Chada, Springboard

Springboard works to provide opportunities for the young people of these areas to gain personal and professional skills by working collectively. Built on a partnership model, the organization works with links to both the public sector and community involvement and stresses the importance of young people's involvement in their own communities.

Much of this work has been through Springboard's Wider Horizons Training Program. Many 'graduates' of Springboard go on to play an active role in the future direction of Springboard.

The Ireland Fund's assistance has been used to fund a grassroots initiative; the Urban Service Project - Belfast, a Springboard program which provides opportunities for young adults from diverse backgrounds to strengthen their communities through public service and helps foster the creation of a new social infrastructure in Northern Ireland.

Tommy Gorman
"To be shown a whole new lifestyle to what I was accoustomed put things in a new perspective for me.

I came home refreshed, a wee bit more grown up, and more focussed than I had been for years. With this new motivation I went out looking for work with my resume greatly enhanced.

I overcame my self-doubt to realise that I was capable of doing the type of work that I wanted to do. I was given renewed confidence in my abilities -the same confidence I hadn't felt for a long time in Belfast."

- Tommy Gorman [edited from his   Graduation speech June 2000]
